The year 2013 marks the bicentennial of Richard Wagner’s birth and represents a perfect opportunity to hold a Wagner celebration. Wagner was first and foremost an opera composer, and his works are usually very large in scope. Bjarni Thor Kristinsson has performed on the operatic stage abroad for a number of years, often appearing in works by Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner. It is an opportunity worth waiting for to hear this star lend his deep, resonant voice to Wagner’s music.

The music of Ludwig van Beethoven has figured prominently in conductor Osmo Vänskä’s recent work. His recordings of all nine Beethoven symphonies with the Minnesota Orchestra, made for BIS Records, have met with resounding praise from critics. Written in 1807 for dramatist Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragedy about Roman general Gaius Marcius Coriolanus, Beethoven’s dramatic Coriolan Overture reflects the conflicts in the life of the soldier.
