Dark Music Days
For this year's Dark Music Days the Iceland Symphony performs Icelandic scores along with contemporary music by some of today's most interesting composers. Metastatis by Iannis Xenakis is composed for 61 instruments, with no two performers playing the same part. Hymnos by Italian master Giacinto Scelsi divides the orchestra antiphonically into two symmetrical groups. Hans Abrahamsen is the guest of honor this year. His new piece, 10 Symphonies, is partially written for this occasion and co-commissioned by the ISO. Amongst Abrahamsen's ex-students is Hugi Guðmundsson who won the Icelandic Music Awards in 2008 for his ambitious work Apocrypha, and whose new work receives its premiére performance at this concert.
